Seizoen 01 Episode 8: Truth and Justice (uitgezonden op 20 mei 2007)



Synopsis
Seizoen 1 laat de
vroegste periode van Hendrik VIII zien; zijn regeer-strubbelingen met zowel lokale als internationale politieke
intriges. Hij wordt daarbij onder druk gezet om een mannelijke troonopvolger te produceren en stoot zijn eerste vrouw,
Catharina van Aragon, af voor de jonge Anna Boleyn.

De vertegenwoordiger van de Paus, Kardinaal Lorenzo Campeggio, arriveert bij Hendrik VIII om van hem te
horen waarom hij wil scheiden van Katherine van Aragon. Kardinaal Wolsey intimideert Campeggio met de woorden: "Laat mij
een aantal zaken aan je duidelijk maken.Wanneer je de scheding van de Koning niet toestaat zal de autoriteit van de Paus
in Engeland tot nul worden teruggebracht.
Wolsey heeft de Koning gegarandeerd dat de scheiding zal worden
toegelaten, maar de Paus en Campeggio zijn niet gemakkelijk te overtuigen. Een desperate Wolsey smeekt Koningin
Katherine om het huwelijk te verwerpen, maar uiteindelijk weigert zij dat.
Door toedoen van Anne Boleyn gaat Henrik
VIII steeds meer aan Wolsey twijfelen. Een pauselijke rechtbank komt in Blackfriar's Church bijeen alwaar Hendrik als
ook Katherine hun pleidooi kunnen houden.

Synopsis
Season
One chronicles the period of Henry VIII's reign in which his effectiveness as king is tested by international conflicts
as well as political intrigue in his own court, while the pressure of fathering a male heir compels him to reject his
wife, Katherine of Aragon,[10] in favour of Anne Boleyn. He also has a string of affairs and fathers an illegitimate son
with his mistress, Elizabeth "Bessie" Blount. The son, Henry FitzRoy, later dies.

In Episode 8:
The
Pope's legate Cardinal Lorenzo Campeggio arrives to hear the case for King Henry VIII's divorce from Katherine of
Aragon. Cardinal Wolsey intimidates Campeggio: "Let me make certain things plain to you. If you do not grant the King
his divorce, papal authority in England will be annihilated!" Wolsey has assured Henry that the divorce will be granted,
but the Pope and Campeggio are not so easily swayed. A desperate Wolsey begs Queen Katherine to abdicate the marriage,
but she ultimately refuses. Wolsey's enemies circle; Anne Boleyn plants more doubt in Henry's mind about Wolsey, who
soon threatens Campeggio both physically and politically. A Legatine Court convenes at Blackfriar's Church, and both
Henry and Katherine plead their cases.
